A Wrenching Farewell: Bidding Adieu to My Primary Care Doctor After Nearly 30 Years - Kaiser Health News

Image
I hadn't expected the tears. My primary care doctor and I were saying goodbye after nearly 30 years together. "You are a kind and a good person," he told me after the physical exam, as we wished each other good luck and good health. "I trust you completely — and always have," I told him, my eyes overflowing. "That means so much to me," he responded, bowing his head. Will I ever have another relationship like the one with this physician, who took time to ask me how I was doing each time he saw me? Who knew me from my first months as a young mother, when my thyroid went haywire, and who since oversaw all my medical concerns, both large and small? It feels like an essential lifeline is being severed. I'll miss him dearly. This isn't my story alone; many people in their 50s, 60s and 70s are similarly undergoing this kind of wrenching transition. A decade ...

Remember getting checked for scoliosis, lice at school? Doctors explain why these health check-ins have since gone away - Yahoo Life

Image
Doctors say there are a few factors behind the overall phase-out of health checks, like scoliosis screenings, at school. (Photo by Angus B. McVicar/Wisconsin Historical Society/Getty Images) Chrissy Teigen shared a random school memory on Twitter Wednesday night, and it got plenty of people talking. "Omg I just casually mentioned I was checked for scoliosis all throughout elementary school where we removed our shirts and bent over and no one at my dinner knows what I'm talking about," she wrote."Was I the only one!? Oh god was I the only one." (Scoliosis, in case you're not familiar with it, is a sideways curve of the spine, per the Mayo Clinic.) The tweet quickly went viral, with people chiming in with their own memories of perfunctory school health checks.  "This was a horrible and humiliating thing I thought was a part of childhood," one person wrote. "Our scoliosis checks happened in the gym with everyone in your entire class watc...

The Medical Minute: Prostate cancer risks in African American men | Penn State University - Penn State News

Image
Prostate cancer, the second-most common cancer in men behind skin cancer with nearly a quarter of a million cases in the U.S. diagnosed annually, plays favorites. African American men are at the highest risk for both developing and dying from the disease. Heightened risk African American men are 1.8 times more likely to develop prostate cancer than white men. The reasons why are complex, said Dr. Eldra Daniels, a family physician with Penn State Health Medical Group – Mount Joy and Penn State Health Lime Spring Outpatient Center. "Genetics play a role as well as the social environment, a history of smoking and limited physical activity," Daniels said, adding that African American men also have less access to high quality care. "We also see a health disparity among African American men," he continued. "They're less likely to get in to see their physician on a regular basis, and when they do see one, they might not get the same attention and intervent...
