HONOLULU — State health officials are urging unvaccinated Hawaii residents to get immunized from measles, which is rapidly spreading across the Pacific. The highly contagious airborne virus, especially dangerous to young children and those with already weakened immune systems, recently caused the deaths of more than two dozen people in Samoa and, earlier this year, more than 400 in the Philippines. The measles outbreak was declared Oct. 16 and is spreading rapidly throughout the island with unprecedented severity, CDC officials said. Children under 5 account for nearly half of cases. In late November, the Pacific nation closed schools nationwide and indefinitely banned children younger than 17 from public gatherings. The number of measles cases represents more than 1 percent of the population of nearly 200,000. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known . It can cause serious health complications, such as pneumonia or encephalitis, and death. Two doses of the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella are 97 percent effective in preventing measles. The current stock of vaccines is being used in high-risk areas as well as routine immunization. Authorities said Monday that a measles epidemic sweeping through Samoa continues to worsen with the death toll rising to 25, all but one of them young children. “We still have a big problem at hand,” Samoa’s Director General of Health Leausa Take Naseri said in a video statement. He said more than 140 new cases of people contracting the virus had been recorded within the past day, bringing the total to about 2,200 cases since the outbreak began last month. He said there are about 20 critically ill children who remain in hospital intensive care units. Public health employees say they cannot overstate their concerns about the low immunization rates among children in the region. Only 65.59% of 2-year-olds in Sauk County were considered “up to date” with the recommended vaccinations in 2018, down nearly 3% since 2013, according to the state Department of Health Services. Over the past two months, a series of free public immunization clinics have helped distribute flu vaccines to nearly 3,900 people as of Nov. 20 — almost four times as many as last year, according to the Anchorage Health Department. The increase in immunizations follows a surge in reported cases of influenza earlier this year. Drew Shannon, a public health nurse with the Anchorage Health Department, said the last spike started in January. ALPENA — District Health Department No. 4 saw the number of immunizations given to the public steadily increase from 2015 to 2018. The number of immunizations increased 25%, from 1,326 in 2015 to 1,664 year, Health Department data shows. The department also issued 320 immunization waivers during that same timeframe. Personal Health Supervisor Leah Werth said the increase was largely because of the decision to begin to accept private insurance starting in 2015. She said it’s not a requirement for health departments to give vaccines to patients with private insurance. There are 1,795 homeless kids attending school in our state, according to the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction.
