The Merebank Clinic will be embarking on their Immunization catch-up drive. All parents are encouraged to bring in their new born babies and children up to the age of six- years-old. Parents are required to carry their children’s immunization card so the clinic staff can see which immunization the child is missing. INSTEAD of making it mandatory, Davao City Councilor Mary Joselle Villafuerte’s proposed ordinance now aims to strengthen the immunization services and coverage of the city through the use of early childhood care and development (ECCD) cards. The proposed ordinance, which is initially named the "ordinance for mandatory vaccination of infants and children in Davao City," was renamed as the "comprehensive immunization for all infants and children ordinance of Davao City" and was finally passed on second reading on Wednesday, September 30. The ordinance was reverted back to second reading on September 15, after Councilor Pamela Librado-Morata and a group of concerned parents and educators, questioned some of its provisions, particularly the word "mandatory" on its title, which they deemed "coercive." “When an effective vaccine is available for COVID-19, it will only defeat the pandemic if it is widely used, creating “herd immunity,” according to a USAToday opinion piece . While this isn’t a particularly controversial statement, the article’s authors arrive at a concerning conclusion: if herd immunity is our best protection, then the government ought to force the vaccination of all Americans—except those with medical contraindications. To do this, government officials must not respect “religious objections” or “personal preference,” the article reads. What’s more, Americans would have to be entered into a government database and obtain an immunization card to prove their compliance. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The mobile clinic from Adventist Health Bakersfield has been on the road since 1996, providing free immunizations to county kids for free. Officials said they provided 16,500 vaccinations to children under 18 last year alone. But the Covid-19 pandemic caused the big RV to remain parked for a couple weeks.
