24 Oct celebrate world day against polio. Ulyana Suprun reminded why it is important to stay if one wants to defeat the dangerous disease.

Poliomyelitis — an acute infectious disease. The disease spreads very rapidly, and this often occurs through dirty hands, contaminated food and water.

Be ill with polio and everyone can, but most often the virus infects children under the age of 5 years. One in 200 polio cases develop deformity of the spine and limbs cause of disability. Drugs against polio does not exist, the only protection is vaccination.

The polio virus can be transmitted from person to person and infect without any symptoms until you infect someone who does not have a vaccination,
– said Suprun.

According to her, enough for 6 doses of the vaccine to create immunity to polio until the end of life.

According to the Calendar of preventive vaccination, the optimum time for administering vaccines:

1 vaccination 2nd month of life (polotna inactivated vaccine);
2 vaccination – 4th month (polotna inactivated vaccine);
Vaccination 3 – 6 months (oral polotna vaccine);
4 shots – 18 months (oral polotna vaccine);
5 vaccinations – 6 years (oral polotna vaccine);
Inoculation of 6 – 14 years (polotna oral vaccine).

Immunization schedule

All vaccines on the Calendar are totally free for the children.

“To defeat the disease should be vaccinated 95% of the population. But the level of vaccination coverage against polio in Ukraine is quite low. If such rates will persist until the end of the year, the level of vaccination coverage of children will reach only 62%,” – said the official.
