NHS & Health 2019 New Year Honours - Medscape

Alongside the sports stars and celebrities dozens of people from the NHS, healthcare, and medical research are recognised in the 2019 New Year Honours list.

NHS England Chair, Lord Prior, said in a statement about the NHS recipients: "These are remarkable people doing extraordinary things for their fellow citizens. The NHS is a unique organisation which has won the hearts and minds of all of us for over 70 years, but its success depends wholly on the people who work in it. Those who have been honoured for their service this year honour us all. Many, many congratulations to them."

Anyone can nominate people for honours – from members of the public to politicians – but the final list is scrutinised by an independent body.
 

Honours

Forty-three awards went to those involved in the response to the major terrorist incidents of 2017, including an OBE for services to healthcare for Dr Malik Ramadhan, consultant and divisional director in emergency care, Barts Health NHS Trust after he cared for patients following last year's London Bridge attack.

"Everyone rallies around in a crisis; it’s what we’re all built for," he said. "I was the resuscitation room commander. I ensured the injured patients had their scans and surgery at the right time and always had the right number of people looking after them."

There's also an OBE for Joy Ongcachuy, a theatre nurse and robotic lead nurse at Barts Hospital, also on duty during the London Bridge attack. She said: "We opened an additional six theatres that night and everyone I called dropped everything they were doing to come to the aid of the patients. No one panicked; everyone was calm and so supportive."

There's an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for Paul Woodrow, director of operations at the London Ambulance Service after the terror attacks in London and the Grenfell Tower fire. He said: "I am extremely honoured and humbled to receive such recognition. I am part of a great organisation that has great people working very hard across all departments, and I dedicate this award to each and every one of them."

There were OBEs for Colin Kelsey, who led the NHS response to the Manchester Arena suicide bombing, and Peter Boorman, lead for Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response for NHS England in London.

An OBE is awarded to Professor Simon Kay, a plastic surgeon who performed the first double hand transplant in the UK. Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said in a statement: "Simon’s work has helped hundreds of children to improve the function and aesthetics of their hands after trauma and to gain more function for those born with hand deformities. One of his proudest achievements has been to champion the value of clinical psychology in all reconstructive surgery, but especially bringing a holistic approach to the child and family."

There's an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for Melissa Mead, National Projects Coordinator, UK Sepsis Trust for services to raising awareness of sepsis. She began a campaign to raise awareness of sepsis after the death of her son William in 2014. She said on Twitter: "I wasn’t able to give this award to William posthumously so I’ll accept it on his behalf. He gave his life to save others this is just my way of being his mum."

In other areas, there's a BEM (British Empire Medal) for Cheryl Johnson, who set up the charity Remember My Baby in response to personal loss.

There's a damehood for Professor Louise Robinson, director of the Newcastle Institute for Ageing.

A damehood for Marianne Griffiths, CEO of the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

There's a knighthood for Dr Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust who becomes a Sir for services to global health and Professor Melvyn Francis Greaves, director, Centre for Evolution and Cancer, The Institute of Cancer Research for services to childhood leukaemia research.

A knighthood for Professor Michael Anthony John Ferguson CBE FRS, Regius professor of life sciences and academic lead for research strategy, University of Dundee for services to science.

Also given knighthoods, Professor David Klenerman FRS, professor of Biophysical Chemistry, University of Cambridge for services to science and the development of high speed DNA sequencing technology.

James MACKEY, chief executive, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust for services to health in England and the community in North Tyneside and Northumberland.

Professor Jonathan Robert Montgomery, chair, Health Research Authority and professor of healthcare law, University College London for services to bioethics and healthcare law.
