Video Player Close MANILA, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Friday that recent measles outbreaks in the Western Pacific region are putting babies, children and young people at risk again and threatening progress in efforts to wipe out the most contagious human disease. "In recent months, we've seen how swiftly and easily measles can make a comeback in communities where not enough children have been immunized," WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Takeshi Kasai said. The U.N. health agency recorded a 250 percent increase of measles cases in the region in 2018, and more than two-thirds of cases were in the Philippines. "The resurgence of measles around the world has resulted in increased importation of the virus to several countries in our region," Kasai said. August is National Immunization Awareness Month . An annual observance held to highlight the importance of vaccinations for people of all ages. However, this year it feels a bit like an oxymoron, as certain high-income areas of the United States have vaccination rates on par with low-income countries around the world. For example, parents in California have been refusing to vaccinate their children through what are called Public Belief Exemptions or Non-medical Exemptions, whereby parents are exempted from the traditional medical recommendations because of what they philosophically believe. In fact, parents in California are opting at twice the rate as previous years from getting their children vaccinated. This has led to immunization rates in places like Santa Monica and Beverly Hills  that are as low as the country of Chad and South Sudan.
