Metro Detroit ranks No. 1 for average monthly health insurance bill cost - Detroit Free Press

Metro Detroit's high auto insurance rates are well documented, but it's actually another monthly bill that the region's bill payers are spending more money on compared with other large metropolitan areas.

Metro Detroiters, on average, are paying more for health insurance each month than 24 other top metros, according to a new report by doxo, a bill pay service, that looked at the 2018 costs of the country's nine most commonly paid bills.

Monthly health insurance bills in the metro Detroit region averaged at $214. That's $78 more per month, or 57% higher, than the average for top 25 metros, according to the report.

Doxo included Detroit, Warren and Ann Arbor in its Detroit classification.

Doxo's data is "based on anonymized, aggregated payment statistics to more than 45,000 billers from 2.5 million users," according to the report.

The report also showed that metro Detroiters spend $1,061 on average for monthly bills, ranking at No. 7 overall. The amount is $77 more than the 25 top metro average and accounts for 22% of metro Detroit residents' average household income. The amount metro Detroiters pay is 5% more per month than the 25 metro average when adjusting for household income. 

Miami's monthly bills were the highest with an average of $1,157.

While it's not metro Detroit's highest above-average bill, drivers in the region are paying more for car insurance than most. Detroit ranks No. 3 on the list with an average monthly cost of $297. Miami ranked first with an average cost of $337, followed by Washington, D.C. at $302.

The Miami metro included Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Port. St. Lucie. 

The Washington, D.C. metro included Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Arlington.

There is some good news: Metro Detroiters' dental insurance bills are unusually low, ranking at No. 22 with an average payment of $20 per month.

Alaska health care giant Providence Health and Services made overtures to the state about taking over management of the troubled Alaska Psychiatric Institute before a lucrative no-bid contract was awarded to Wellpath , a Tennessee-based company that sprouted from the private prison industry, a letter between hospital executives and lawmakers shows.
