SSM Health to introduce health insurance for St. Louis area customers - STLtoday.com

Whether through Affordable Care Act marketplaces or not, SSM Health announced Wednesday that it will offer new health insurance options for individuals in the St. Louis area, beginning this fall.

“Members will enjoy convenient, coordinated access to SSM Health’s comprehensive network of physicians, hospitals, outpatient and virtual care services in addition to other high-quality providers in the region,” the Creve Coeur-based nonprofit health system said in a statement. The 39,000-employee organization encompasses 23 hospitals, more than 290 physician offices and other health care facilities across Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin and Oklahoma.

The new plans, called WellFirst Health, will be available to local individuals and families “both on and off” the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, marketplaces facilitated by the federal government, the statement said.

The new coverage options are expected to be available for the marketplaces’ upcoming open enrollment period stretching from Nov. 1 to Dec. 15, and would apply to residents in the city of St. Louis, St. Louis County and St. Charles County. Ensuing coverage would begin on Jan. 1, 2020.

Despite the organization’s St. Louis ties, it said this will be its “first health insurance offering” in the area. It does own and operate Dean Health Plan, a 400,000-member health insurance company in Wisconsin. SSM Health said that experience will enable it to “reduce costs, improve quality, and deliver a better, fully coordinated and personalized member and patient experience.”
