Immunizations

The Lord Fairfax Health District is offering required preschool immunization shots for rising seventh graders, even for those who will attend school virtually. Shots will be given on a walk-up basis from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today at the Our Health Campus on the grassy area bordering the 300 block of North Cameron Street, Winchester. In case of rain, a tent will be set up.

Yard sale

First Baptist Church in Woodstock will host a yard sale to benefit Relay for Life starting at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Rotary shelter at the Woodstock Town Park.

Ruritan

The Hamburg Ruritan Club will hold its annual steak and baked potato dinner at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Edinburg Park’s Ruritan Pavilion. Those attending are asked to bring a salad and eating utensils.

Library

Samuels Library in Front Royal will hold the following virtual programs for children:

• Science Scouts (ages 6-11): 4:30 p.m., Tuesday and Sept. 15.

• Symphony of Sound (ages 6-11): 4:30 p.m., Sept. 14.

Story times are held weekly at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and 10 a.m. on Thursdays.

Pup pool party

The Town of New Market will host its annual pup pool party from 1-4 p.m. Sept. 13 at the town pool.

Requirements for dogs to participate are proof of rabies vaccinations, handlers must be 18 or older and leashes will be required.

Preregistration is recommended by going online at https://tinyurl.com/y4kd6hvl. Donations of dog or cat dog food, toys, accessories and treats will be accepted for the Shenandoah County Animal Shelter.

College news

Luke Shriver, of Winchester, graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania on Aug. 8, earning a bachelor’s degree in digital forensics.

Alaska health care giant Providence Health and Services made overtures to the state about taking over management of the troubled Alaska Psychiatric Institute before a lucrative no-bid contract was awarded to Wellpath , a Tennessee-based company that sprouted from the private prison industry, a letter between hospital executives and lawmakers shows. In early February, Wellpath was awarded a roughly $43 million-per-year contract to operate API, the state’s only psychiatric hospital. State officials declared an emergency and circumvented the usual government procurement rules, saying the hospital was unsafe and about to lose federal funding.
