Ordinance aims to strengthen immunization services in Davao City - SunStar Philippines

Image
INSTEAD of making it mandatory, Davao City Councilor Mary Joselle Villafuerte’s proposed ordinance now aims to strengthen the immunization services and coverage of the city through the use of early childhood care and development (ECCD) cards. The proposed ordinance, which is initially named the "ordinance for mandatory vaccination of infants and children in Davao City," was renamed as the "comprehensive immunization for all infants and children ordinance of Davao City" and was finally passed on second reading on Wednesday, September 30. The ordinance was reverted back to second reading on September 15, after Councilor Pamela Librado-Morata and a group of concerned parents and educators, questioned some of its provisions, particularly the word "mandatory" on its title, which they deemed "coercive." With the new approved title, Villafuerte said the ordinance aims to strengthen the existing Republic Act (RA) 10152 or the Mandatory Infants and Ch

SEATTLE, Washington — The Rotary District 1240 club created the Purple Pinkie campaign more than 20 years ago to eradicate polio and has developed into an extremely successful and creative movement for bringing polio immunization to the public’s attention and raising funds. Up until the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the world was likely the closest it has ever been to completely eradicating polio that cripples and sometimes kills children under 5 years of age. However, the strain COVID-19 has put on public health systems has pulled resources away from funding other critical health work, including polio immunization. Polio Immunization The Purple Pinkie campaign involves painting your pinkie purple to match the purple stamp children in developing countries receive on their finger after being immunized. This iconic campaign has helped Rotary vaccinate over 2.5 billion children through their End Polio Now initiative. In conjunction with other organizations, such as the United Nations Child

By Anthony Boadle BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil and several other Latin American countries have informed the World Health Organization (WHO) they need more time to sign up for its global COVID-19 vaccine allocation plan known as COVAX, officials said on Thursday. Countries have until midnight on Friday to formalize legally binding commitments to COVAX, a mechanism for pooled procurement and equitable distribution of eventual vaccines. A representative for the GAVI Alliance, the COVAX secretariat that will handle the requests for an extension, said by email that details of which nations have joined COVAX so far will only be made public after the deadline. "The federal government, as well as other countries, continues in talks with GAVI to extend the deadline for formalizing Brazil's participation in the initiative," a Brazilian statement said. Brazil, which has the world's most severe outbreak outside the United States and India, said more time was needed to ga

Middletown, N.J. – Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger (R-Monmouth) has introduced legislation, bill A4659 , which seeks to reinforce parental and guardian rights as it pertains to children receiving mandated yearly influenza immunizations or “seasonal flu shots:” “Parents of New Jersey, given the proper facts, are best suited to make health decisions for themselves and their families, especially for their children,” says Scharfenberger. “Medical decisions, whether they involve diagnosis, treatment, or preventative measures, are highly personal and should remain such.” Bill A4659 comes at a key time as officials in Trenton are considering making seasonal flu immunization shots mandatory for school-aged children . Assemblyman Scharfenberger’s legislation seeks to prevent such and leave the ultimate choice of whether children should or should not receive flu shots at the rightful hands of parents, guardians, and medical professionals – not politicians: Sign Up for Holmdel & Colt
