For anyone feeling ill on Christmas or while vacationing far from home, the nearest urgent care clinic may be the only option for avoiding an emergency room.

Their competitive advantages, from a business standpoint, are many. Urgent care clinics are open seven days a week and often late into the evening. They take walk-ins or same-day appointments, don't require a referral and charge much less than an ER.

But they weren't as common 15 years ago, when Zoom+Care Management Inc. opened its first outlet at an outdoor shopping mall in a suburb of Portland, Oregon. Zoom+ has grown to 60 clinics, mostly in the Pacific Northwest, including roughly two dozen in just the past two years. That growth trajectory has gained more, well, urgency amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
