🌱 Huntington Daily: Man Sues Police Department + Writing Contest - Huntington, NY Patch

  1. Huntington man sues Suffolk Police Department. A Huntington man has filed a federal lawsuit against the Suffolk County Police Department, claiming that his civil rights were violated when a Second Precinct officer arrested him last year after a traffic stop.
    Martine MacDonald, who served as a member of the Suffolk County police reform committee, said he was stopped and falsely accused of running a stop sign in Greenlawn on Jan. 12, 2021. The lawsuit said he was held for several hours and tried to be talked into admitting fault to the traffic violation and then given a desk appearance ticket. Officers also told him they were going to give him a sobriety test because of how he barreled through the stop sign. (http://www.huntingtonNow.com)
  2. How Town of Huntington students can enter writing contest. Students grade 4 through 12 are invited to join the annual "Huntington Youth Writes" contest. Students who attend school and/or live in the Town of Huntington may enter the contest. Since it began in 1999, over 20,000 entries have been received in the program. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. March 4. The entry form is online. The winners will receive gift cards and have their work showcased and published by the Town of Huntington. (Huntington Patch)
  3. Huntington Hospital opens Reichert Family Caregiver Center. On Tuesday, Huntington Hospital announced the Reichert Family Caregiver Center is now complete. The 550-square-foot space was designed to offer extra care outside of the hospital. It was funded by a $500,000 gift from the Charles and Helen Reichert Family Foundation, according to the hospital.   • Huntington Union Free School District: Olivia Conte enjoyed a great day at the Suffolk League II Track & Field Championships at Suffolk-West in Brentwood. The Huntington High School senior won a pair of gold medals and also captured a silver medal. A state champion and All-American, Conte has been one of the Blue Devils' best for many years. She runs during the winter and spring seasons and is among the Huntington Blue Devil marching band's highly regarded color guard unit in the fall. (Facebook)
  • South Huntington Public Library: The American Library Association has announced the 2022 Youth Media Awards which includes the Caldecott Medal, Newbery Medal, Coretta Scott King Award, Printz Award and Pura Belpre Award. (Facebook)
  • Huntington Union Free School District: Repairs to the Huntington High School gym and the lower area beneath the gym that includes equipment rooms, locker rooms, coaches' offices, showers, restrooms and the weight room and a film room are moving along after a flood caused extensive damage. Physical education classes have been moved to various areas elsewhere in the high school building. A total of 16 varsity and junior varsity basketball games have been rescheduled to Walt Whitman, Harborfields and Elwood-John H. Glenn. Practices have moved to Washington Primary, J. Taylor Finley Middle School, Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School and Coindre Hall. (Facebook)
