Richmond University Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health Care System Expand Affiliation to Include Emergency Care - Mount Sinai
Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) and Mount Sinai Health System have announced a clinical and academic affiliation to provide emergency medical care and trauma services through RUMC's Emergency Department. A Level I Adult Trauma Center and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, RUMC's Emergency Department will now feature specialists, physicians, physician assistants and medical personnel assigned to RUMC as well as other medical professionals from throughout Mount Sinai Health System. The deployment of Mount Sinai's tremendous expertise in emergency medicine will advance RUMC's ongoing effort to provide the best possible emergency care to Staten Islanders. The expanded affiliation is to be effective July 1, 2022.
This latest announcement between RUMC and Mount Sinai expands on an existing affiliation between the two health care providers established in 2020 that integrated specialty services provided on Staten Island by both entities. This announcement also comes as RUMC prepares to open its new 35,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Emergency Department this summer.
"We are delighted to further expand and enhance our affiliation with Mount Sinai Health System," said Daniel J. Messina, PhD, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Richmond University Medical Center. "Adding Mount Sinai's emergency medicine expertise with our own team of experienced professionals here at RUMC will provide our community with expanded access to outstanding healthcare services available in the New York metropolitan area in a setting that's close to home."
Under the agreement, Mount Sinai and RUMC will integrate care for emergency medicine, trauma, and critical care services provided at RUMC's emergency department; and extend admitting privileges at RUMC to Mount Sinai medical specialists.
"We excitedly look forward to collaborating with the leadership of RUMC and their dedicated team of professionals to bring Mount Sinai's expertise in emergency medicine care to the community of Staten Island," said Margaret Pastuszko, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mount Sinai Health System. "The preservation of the current RUMC Emergency Department's clinical and administrative leadership will also enhance a smooth transition for the patients and staff and drive optimally coordinated care. Mount Sinai's mission is to advance medicine and health through unrivaled education, research and discovery – and to deliver care that is the safest, highest quality, and most accessible and equitable to all."
RUMC's Emergency Department is fully equipped to handle all levels of adult and pediatric emergencies and has designated areas for triage, pediatrics, chest/stroke care, trauma resuscitation, women's health, and urgent care to name just a few. Treating over 50,000 people annually, RUMC operates one of the busiest emergency departments in the New York metropolitan area. The Emergency Department is also a New York State Department of Health designated Stroke and STEMI treatment center as well as Staten Island's only Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) Center of Excellence. Since 2020, RUMC's Emergency Department has been in the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, caring for over 9,000 COVID positive patients since the pandemic began.
RUMC's new Emergency Department will enhance both simple and complex critical care management while maintaining Staten Island's only advanced Trauma Center while fostering strategic growth and academic excellence across diverse clinical care service lines. The new Emergency Department will provide 35,000 square feet of space, compared to 15,000 square feet in the hospital's current ED, which was built in 1978 — an increase of 133 percent. The new Emergency Department will occupy the ground level of a new two-story pavilion connected to the existing hospital. Some of the features inside the new Emergency Department include expanded emergency trauma, critical care and resuscitation unit and triage sections; enhanced specialty areas for pediatrics and urgent care; new Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SAFE) suites to ensure privacy and protection; larger ambulance bays; and a patient friendly drop-off area with easier front entrance access. The second floor of the new pavilion will be used for upgrades and expansion, including ten brand-new surgical operating suites and perioperative space.
