New Understanding of 'Superantigens' Could Lead To Improved Staph Infection Treatments - University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine

Image
The bacterium  Staphylococcus aureus  has long been known to cause infections in humans, ranging from mild skin infections to pneumonia to more serious infections of the heart. In high-income countries, it's the leading cause of a sometimes-fatal condition known as infective endocarditis, involving inflammation of the heart's valves or lining. Now, in a new study, researchers at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine describe another way the bacterium can cause harm: by undermining the body's ability to heal from those infections. The findings may point the way toward improving treatment of infections with  S. aureus , more commonly called a staph infection. Multi-marker approach using C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, neutrophil CD64 index for the prognosis of sepsis in intensive care unit: a retrospective cohort study - BMC Infectious Diseases - BMC Infectious Diseases

Image
Study design and participant enrollment This was a single-center retrospective study carried out at the First Affiliated Hospital of GuangZhou University of Chinese Medicine. From January 2018 to July 2021, a total of 402 consecutive septic patients (no COVID-19 patients) were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) (Fig. 1). The diagnosis was based on Sepsis 3.0 definition. There was no age restriction (except for neonates). The exclusion criteria were as followed: missing date, malignant tumor and immunocompromised state (e.g., long-term use of glucocorticoids, immunosuppressants). To check whether our sample size was large enough to develop a clinical prediction model, we applied the approach proposed by Riley et al. [12]. According to a 28-day mortality of 30% [13] and 5 candidate predictors, at least 323 patients were required. Eventually, 349 patients were included in the study. The survival time of each patient was recorded. If the patient survived more than 28 days, ...

Florida Attorney General Moody, hospital districts battle over opioid settlements - CBS News

Image
TALLAHASSEE - Attorney General Ashley Moody's office this week pushed back against two public hospital districts battling Moody about settlements with pharmaceutical-industry companies over the opioid epidemic. As part of a flurry of filings in Leon County circuit court, Moody's office disputed arguments by the Sarasota County Public Hospital District and Lee Memorial Health System that Moody had reached settlements that would improperly scuttle the districts' separate legal claims against the industry. "The hospital districts imperil the receipt and/or distribution of at least millions of dollars of settlement funds from the opioid settling defendants (industry companies) to the state of Florida to abate the opioid crisis," lawyers in Moody's office wrote in one document. "The state of Florida has recognized the serious problems posed by the opioid crisis, which require the urgent deployment of significant resources to abate the crisis in Florida."...
