Dental pedagogy in the 'new normal' COVID-19 era: a transition ... - BMC Medical Education

In considering infection control in an institutionalized setting or otherwise, the analytical and subsequent decision-making processes should generally be based on the following three main principles. 3.1. Administrative controls offer work policies and procedures to reduce the exposure of all stakeholders to the identified hazard and change the way people work. 3.2. Engineering controls entail changes in the physical features of the workplace, such as hospital design and configuration, to mitigate pathogen exposure at the source and improve compliance. 3.3. Personal protective equipment (PPE) utilization was considered with engineering solutions and administrative controls (Note: PPE is not described here as it is beyond the remit of this article). The following describes in detail how the MOPSs entailing engineering and administrative control measures were planned and implemented at the University Dental Hospital Sharjah, UAE (UDHS-UAE) (Fig. 1). Antidepressants linked to antibiotic resistance: E. coli study - New York Post

Image
The widespread use of antibiotics has long been implicated in the rise of drug-resistant infections. Now, scientists wonder whether unrelated drugs play a role too. In a new study, antidepressants — designed to regulate the brain chemistry of patients with mental illness — were also linked to Escherichia coli (E. coli) antibiotic resistance. Researchers reported that when E. coli bacteria were exposed to commonly prescribed antidepressants, including fluoxetine (Prozac) and escitalopram (Lexapro), they developed a resistance to many forms of antibiotics. While some E. coli can be harmless, some strains of infection are sure to prompt uncomfortable abdominal symptoms, such as diarrhea and vomiting. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia, exposed one E. coli strain, MG1655, to five of these commonly prescribed antidepressants and tested their strength against six different types of ant

The Flu-ification of COVID Policy Is Almost Complete - The Atlantic

Image
For all the legwork that public-health experts have done over the past few years to quash comparisons between COVID-19 and the flu, there sure seems to be a lot of effort nowadays to equate the two. In an advisory meeting convened earlier today, the FDA signaled its intention to start doling out COVID vaccines just like flu shots: once a year in autumn, for just about everyone, ad infinitum. Whatever the brand, primary-series shots and boosters (which might no longer be called "boosters") will guard against the same variants, making them interchangeable. Doses will no longer be counted numerically. "This will be a fundamental transition," says Jason Schwartz, a vaccine policy expert at Yale—the biggest change to the COVID-vaccination regimen since it debuted. Hints of the annual approach have been dropping, not so subtly, for years. Even in the spring of 2021, Pfizer's CEO was floating the idea of yearly shots; Peter Marks, the director of the FDA's Center f

"I can't tell you how appreciative I am of all the love, all the support, and everything that's just been coming in my way," Hamlin said. Damar Hamlin expressed gratitude for his family, doctors, teammates, and supporters during his first public address since collapsing from cardiac arrest during Monday Night Football earlier in January. PiCoVacc vaccine candidate for COVID-19 effective in animal trials - News-Medical.Net

Image
In a new study available on the bioRxiv preprint server , a group of researchers from China report on the pilot-scale production of a purified inactivated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus vaccine candidate (PiCoVacc), shown to induce virus-specific neutralizing antibodies in rats, mice, and non-human primates. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 caused an unprecedented crisis, taking a heavy toll not only on human health but also on the global economy. The number of COVID-19 cases is still on the rise worldwide, without a proven treatment modality or vaccine. "The serious pandemic of the current COVID-19 and the precipitously increasing numbers of death worldwide necessitate the urgent development of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, requiring a new pandemic paradigm", explains the bioRxiv study researchers. CDC warns of rising strep throat infections among children - PBS NewsHour

Image
Dr. Peter Hotez: Yes, that's right. Typically, we give the first measles vaccinations called MMR, measles, mumps, rubella, vaccine, towards the end of the first year of life. My understanding is, of the 80 plus cases, about more than 70, 75 have been unvaccinated. So this is, in many respects, a self-inflicted wound, that a lot of these cases or all of these cases could have been prevented had those kids receive their routine MMR vaccination. So, what I'm really worried about, Geoff, is, this is spillover from all the anti-vaccine activism we saw really take off around COVID-19 vaccines for adults. Remember, the numbers are horrific. An estimated 200,000 Americans needlessly lost their lives because they refused the COVID vaccine, even after vaccines became widely available, and it's happening because of a rise in what I call the anti-vaccine, anti-science aggression coming from activists. And now I think they're going to try to target all childhood immuni

Those serving on active duty may also be incentivized by education and housing socioeconomic programs, such as the GI Bill and VA Loan respectively. In addition, military resident physician salaries are 53% more than their civilian counterparts. 1 After residency graduation, military family physicians make between the median and 80th percentile for civilian salary, depending on their rank, when their basic allowance for housing, basic allowance for subsistence, boar

COVID-19 Vaccines You Can Drink, Snort or Inhale Could Be the Future - CNET

For the most up-to-date news and information about the coronavirus pandemic, visit the WHO and CDC websites. What if you could drink your COVID-19 vaccine instead of rolling up your sleeve? No needle -- just a "swish and swallow," and your new immunity is down the hatch.  You might be able to within the next couple of years, as researchers expand their focus onto mucosal vaccines, which include nasal or inhaled vaccines as well as "swish and swallow" oral vaccines such as QYNDR, which completed its phase 1 clinical trial and is currently waiting on more funding to conduct the more detailed, advanced trials that could actually br
