ORA Orthopedics To Build $50 Million New Outpatient Surgery Center In Bettendorf

ORA Orthopedics plans to build a new 113,000-square-foot outpatient surgery center and headquarters near the TBK Bank Sports Complex in Bettendorf. 

Once finished, the $50 million facility will eventually hold services relocated from ORA's 53rd Avenue location in Bettendorf. Other locations in Silvis, northwest Davenport, Moline, Geneseo, DeWitt, Muscatine and Clinton will remain open. 

The company expects construction to begin this summer and have the facility completed in 2026. 

ORA Orthopedics is planning a new $50 million facility in the TBK Sports Complex area. It'll replace its Bettendorf orthopedic clinic and outpatient surgery center on 53rd Avenue in Bettendorf.

The new building will include a 51,000-square-foot orthopedic outpatient surgical center with 10 operating rooms and two procedure rooms, 14,000 square feet of physical and occupational therapy space with an aquatic therapy pool, an imaging suite with MRI, CT, and digital X-Ray capabilities, clinical offices for orthopedic surgeons, a specialized walk-in urgent care clinic and administrative offices to be headquartered at the new campus. 

ORA currently employs 540 people, and the new campus is expected to increase ORA's employee headcount by about 150, the company said in a news release. 

"As leaders in sports medicine, our new location will also provide synergy with TBK's expansion of its Bettendorf Complex in golf and other sports facilities," said Dr. Edward Connolly, ORA orthopedic surgeon and practice president. "This next-level, best-in-class orthopedic campus will allow us to better serve our team, recreational and professional athletes."

The ORA Orthopedics building is part of a second phase of development on 100 acres east of Middle Road, which will include Iron Tee, an interactive climate-controlled 58-bay golf range scheduled to open in May; another multi-sport building expected to be constructed this summer and open in January 2025; a SpringHill Suites by Marriott expected to open by spring 2025; and shops and restaurants, including a McDonald's, which will be under construction this summer.

Also, to the southeast corner of Middle Road and Forest Grove Drive, QCR Holdings, Inc., plans to build a new corporate headquarters and a consumer banking branch of Quad City Bank & Trust.

The study also says adults sometimes skip doctors visits for many years, especially if they feel healthy.

Many nurses enter the profession to help others, but long hours, stress, and burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic have taken a toll on the profession, contributing to shortages throughout the health care sector. Traveling nurses alleviate some of these shortages, providing short-term relief to overburdened staff.

Vivian Health analyzed its proprietary data to find the 20 cities where travel nurses earn the most, relative to typical earnings for the area. This analysis was based on March 1 data from nearly 600 U.S. Cities, limited to those with populations above 10,000 people and fell within the top 1,000 overall highest-paying for travel nurses. Cities were then ranked based on the ratio of total average weekly wages for travel nurses compared to the city's average income per capita, sourced from the Census Bureau.

Since the 1970s, nurses have traveled around the country to supplement hospital staff when they experience an influx of patients. During the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals nationwide experienced higher patient numbers and called on travel nurses to help. The increased workload also contributed to many nurses leaving the industry altogether. By the end of 2021, about 100,000 nurses quit or transferred to roles outside of patient care, a four-decade high, according to Health Affairs.

Many who stayed in the profession have opted for travel nursing, with more considering this option. About 12% of U.S. Nurses say they will work as travel nurses in the coming year, up from 8% who planned to pursue travel nursing in 2019, according to a major AMN Healthcare survey from May 2023. The stat is slightly higher among hospital nurses, 15% of whom said they would work as a travel nurse in the coming year.

Travel nurses work on a contract basis. Most contracts last between eight and 26 weeks but can be as short as a few days or up to a year. Many nurses appreciate the flexibility of contract work, which allows for breaks between stints and the opportunity to experience different areas of the country.

Travel nursing can also be more lucrative than salaried staff nursing; when a hospital is understaffed, travel nurses can negotiate for more money, particularly if they have technical expertise. Across the U.S., registered nurses earn an average of $89,010 annually—or about $1,712 per week. By comparison, travel nurses earn an average of $2,128 per week, according to Vivian Health data.

Many of the highest-paying cities for travel nurses are in California, which is among the highest-paying states for travel nurses, at an average of $2,332 per week. The most lucrative cities for travel nurses on this list range in size—as urban, suburban, and rural communities all need help covering nursing shortages.

Saturn In Pisces Foot Fuqery

Pisces is classically associated with the feet and Saturn corresponds with – amongst other things – vexations, slow-resolving complaints and delays.

I sometimes scoff at the medieval medical astrology attributions as they can seem quite trite yet foot fuqery is on the rise since Saturn in Pisces. Searches along the line of "what is a metatarsal?" or "alternative remedy for plantar facist (sic)" are trending up and it's not only because of post-lockdown over-clocked fitness regimes.

We now have more work-from-homers and as Amanda Hull wrote in the Atlantic last year, orthopedic and so-called 'health shoes' have become cool with Millennials.

Yes, it's ancedotal but every second person I know or encounter – of all ages  – is working away at weird Achilles Tendonitis inflammation and re-embracing toe separators or the decades-old foot exercises where you pick up marbles with your toes and so forth.

In fact, the mid-1960s Saturn in Pisces phase was the making of the original 'fitness sandal' Birkenstock.* That was when it went from kooky German gymnastics shoe to counter-cultural hipster hoof-wear – the obvious match with mung-beans and tantric meditation for people like Cybil Shepherd or Steve Jobs.

The shoe brand apparently gave customers hand-printed instructions for cold springwater footbaths with pine-needles which frankly, sound fantastic. But then again, I have Saturn on cruise control gliding toward my Sun.

Since Saturn arrived in Pisces this time around, we've also seen the mildly menacing Time magazine take – Why You Shouldn't Walk Barefoot At Home and a broad trend away from feet as something best left 'au naturel' to the benefits of more 'architectural' solutions.

We can go even deeper and think about how the South Node in Libra exaggarates postural and relationship imbalances to the extent that your gait could reflect internal conditions. So many feet problems come from micro imbalances over time, right?

Hippocrates, who apparently invented the scalpel because he wanted to remove corns from his feet, agreed with the 'best foot forward' philosophy of the Ancient Egyptians: the 'best' foot is the left, in this philosophy, because it is the heart side of the body. It's metaphysically complex of course but it gives the 'favoring one foot or side' syndrome new depth.

So, how about you? Are feet more of a thing for you since Saturn in Pisces?
