Riverside To Review Safety Protocols After Apparent Murder-suicide In Hospital Room
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News is evaluating its safety protocols following an apparent murder-suicide on Sunday that left a husband and wife dead in a hospital room.
Sunday morning, shots rang out from a fourth floor patient room, where authorities discovered the bodies of a husband and wife.
The husband, a patient at the hospital, was apparently shot by his wife before she turned the gun on herself, police said.

"It's not a call that I want to get, or anyone wants to get at 8 o'clock in the morning," said Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew.
Officers and hospital staff responded quickly, and found the couple – a husband and wife in their 70s - dead inside the room.
Drew told News 3 on Sunday that it appears this was an act to relieve suffering, but they're asking more questions to make sure.
"Everything we know at this point is there was no act of anger or violence toward staff or anyone else," he said. "It was very isolated. It wasn't in the elevator or hallway entrance. It was in one room."

No one else was hurt and patient care was not impacted, according Chief Drew, who had been the only representative to give a statement — until Monday.
We followed up about this incident with Riverside, which replied with a statement to News 3:
"We're deeply saddened by yesterday's events," the statement reads. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those impacted."
Guns are prohibited at Riverside, according to the health system's code of conduct.
"No weapons of any kind are allowed, including firearms, knives, pepper spray and Tasers," its policy reads.
Riverside Patient Rights, Visitation & ResponsibilitiesThere is, according to the Virginia Citizens Defense League, no explicit prohibition on carrying firearms in hospitals in Virginia law. Businesses and other private organizations have the right to bar weapons from their property.
"The health and safety of our team members, Riverside patients, and their loved ones is our primary focus," Riverside's statement continues. "We regularly review our safety protocols and procedures to ensure Riverside Health and its care facilities are safe places to heal and work. We will continue to review our safety protocols and make improvements to ensure the safety of those who work and choose Riverside for their care."

Questions About Safety Raised After Murder-suicide At Riverside Regional Medical Center

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Detectives with the Newport News Police Department are still investigating the circumstances surrounding an apparent murder-suicide at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
On Sunday, officers were called to the hospital after they said a wife shot her husband and then herself inside a hospital room, according to police.
Authorities said both were in their 70s. "I don't think anyone woke up this morning and think that would happen or could happen," said Police Chief Steve Drew Sunday morning outside the hospital.
Following the incident, many on social media offered prayers to the family and questioned safety at the hospital. Several people would like to know how the gun got into the hospital. The Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association represents 26 health systems and 111 hospitals across the Commonwealth.
While the association could not comment on Sunday's event, they said safety was a top priority.
"Hospitals across Virginia, both individually and as a part of the VHHA health care and safety and security workgroup, are all actively considering and acting and working through these issues as they implement or consider the pathway to enhance safety and security features at their facilities," said Julian Walker, the Vice President of Communications with Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.
Some safety features include posting signage to prohibit guns being brought inside and security teams on campuses. According to a survey, violent crime rose at U.S. Hospitals. However, the Leapfrog Safety group reports Virginia hospitals rank number two in safety.
Riverside Health released this statement regarding the incident:
"We're deeply saddened by yesterday's events. Our thoughts and prayers are with those impacted.
Our primary focus is the health and safety of our team members, Riverside patients, and their loved ones. We regularly review our safety protocols and procedures to ensure Riverside Health and its care facilities are safe places to heal and work. We will continue to review our safety protocols and make improvements to ensure the safety of those who work and choose Riverside for their care."

Police Probe Murder-suicide At Virginia Hospital
Newport News (Va.) police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that took place at Riverside Regional Medical Center on May 26.
Officers were called to respond to a shooting on the morning of May 26, police said in a news release. Upon arrival to a patient room at the hospital, police found two adults — a husband and wife in their late 70s — who were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the incident "appears to be a murder-suicide," and that they are not looking for any suspects.
The husband was a patient at the hospital and was apparently shot by his wife, who then shot herself, Steve Drew, chief of the Newport News Police Department, told CBS affiliate WTKR. Authorities are investigating how she was able to bring a gun inside the medical center.

Riverside Regional Medical Center was placed on a brief lockdown following the incident, which has since been lifted.
