OPINION

It's tragic but true! Our local and state parks are becoming inundated with cats released by irresponsible pet owners: pregnant females, kittens, reproductive adult males and females.

This is unfair to the cats, adjacent land owners, park maintenance staff and our native birds. Cats don't just eat rodents. Our domestic and feral cats are now the number-one killers of song birds in North America. This impact is added to others: more frequent storms, floods and habitat loss, to name a few. A recent scientific report from the National Audubon Society states that there are now 27% fewer birds in North America since 1970.

Most pet owners are responsible. They have their pets neutered, kept inside (unless on leash or back yard enclosures), provide adequate food and water, and guarantee appropriate immunization shots. If their ownership ends, they seek new homes or have the animal humanly euthanized depending on the circumstance.

Please don't acquire pets unless you have the finances and time to care for them while respecting the birds living in our natural habitats. Our native birds and natural parks will thank you. Added bonus - your pets will live longer and healthier lives.
