The Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California, dubbed the happiest place on Earth, reopened to residents of the state on Friday more than a year after it shut down. The park is not permitting groups larger than three households and capacity has been capped at 25 per cent. The reservation system showed that all parks within Disneyland — Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure park — are already sold out Friday and Saturday but Sunday tickets for the adventure park appeared to be available. In the past Disneyland had only ever closed a few times — following the assassination of President John F Kennedy, after the Northridge earthquake in 1994 and on a few other occasions — but those closures lasted just one day. Disney World in Orlando, Florida, opened at 35 per cent capacity in July last year. What's Behind Benton County's Comparatively Low COVID-19 Vaccination Rate? - KNSI

Image
(KNSI) – Across the state, roughly 57 percent of residents 16 and older have gotten at least their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. However, this percentage fluctuates by county, and Benton County has the lowest vaccination rate by population in the state. So far, 34 percent of the county's eligible population has gotten vaccinated. Benton County community health supervisor Sam Hageman says there are many factors that play into this. Hageman said there is not an issue with getting vaccines from the state of Minnesota, but she says the county has struggled with getting people to sign up for vaccine clinics, and appointment no-shows are increasing. "For this reason, we have suspended our community clinics for the time being, and have started working on scheduling pop-up clinics around the county in partnership with CentraCare," Hageman said. Area residents also have many venues to choose from when they want to receive their COVID-19 vaccine, from pharmacies to heal

Prior SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with protection against reinfection - 2 Minute Medicine

Image
1. Previous infection from SARS-CoV-2 was linked to an 84% lower incidence of reinfection. 2. Median interval between primary infection and reinfection of COVID-19 was greater than 200 days. Evidence Rating Level: 2 (Good) Study Rundown: While it has been suggested that a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection confers protection against subsequent infection, little is known about the degree and length of protection acquired from natural infection. This multicenter prospective cohort study enrolled healthcare workers, support staff, and administrative staff working at hospitals who could remain enrolled for at least 12 months of follow-up. Participants were required to complete questionnaires on symptoms and exposures every two weeks as well as undergo SARS-CoV-2 PCR and antibody testing every two to four weeks. This study found that there was a nearly 84% reduced risk of infection in individuals with prior infection or who were antibody-positive at enrollment as opposed to those wh

Bothwell to host Johnson & Johnson vaccine clinic - Sedalia Democrat

By Democrat Staff Bothwell Regional Health Center will offer the one-dose Johnson & Johnson/Janssen (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, April 30 at the Bothwell Healing Arts Center. The move comes after the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services resumed the use of the J&J vaccine. This decision was made following the announcement by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that it has studied and confirmed that the pause on its use can be lifted. It was concluded that the known and potential benefits of the J&J vaccine outweigh its known and potential risks. Bothwell's vaccine clinic is located on the second floor of the Bothwell Healing Arts Center at 3700 W. 10th St. in Sedalia. People may walk in or call 660-829-8822 to make an appointment. Global Pneumococcal Vaccines Disease Analysis Report 202: Overall Likelihood of Approval of a Phase I Pneumococcal Vaccine is 16.7% - GlobeNewswire

Image
Dublin, April 09, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Disease Analysis: Pneumococcal Vaccines" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering. The value of the pneumococcal vaccines market will steadily grow over the forecast period due to increasing elderly populations across France, Spain, and the US, alongside continued short-term price increases in the lucrative US market. A brief period of increased growth is expected with the anticipated launch of the 20-valent vaccine, PF-06482077, which may replace Prevnar 13 and Pneumovax 23 in adults (from June 2021) and Prevnar 13/V114 in infants (from mid-2023). Overall, the biggest opportunity for short-term growth within the pneumococcal vaccines market is associated with increasing vaccination rates within the elderly in the US and Italian markets; however, the 2019 reversal of the original 2014 ACIP recommendation for Prevnar 13's use in the elderly population will hamper its growth in the US. As the only vacc

A Telemedicine Screening Program for Diabetic Retinopathy - Physician's Weekly

Data indicate that only about one-half of people with diabetes are properly screened for diabetic retinopathy (DR), and many patients at high risk for vision loss do not receive treatment. "Annual DR screening has been recommended by guidelines for years, but many Americans have limited access to these screenings," says Yi Zhang, MD, PhD.  "A more practical alternative is to perform DR screening when caring for patients at primary care offices and then referring those who need further eye care to ophthalmologists or retina specialists. By bringing DR screening to primary care, we may be able to identify this treatable condition earlier and improve visual outcomes." For a study published in BMC Ophthalmology , Dr. Zhang, Jeffrey D. Henderer, MD, and colleagues evaluated how often positive retinopathy screening exams via telehealth resulted in a completed ophthalmology appointment among patients at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. Data from a

Community health nursing | UDaily - UDaily

Image
Jennifer Graber, an associate professor in the School of Nursing, said the vaccination clinics are an important experience for these fourth-year nursing students, who traditionally get most of their undergraduate clinical experiences in a hospital. "This is public health. This is community health. This is a completely different aspect of nursing for them," said Graber, who is also associate dean of academic affairs and practice initiatives. "It's very different than being in the hospital and doing tasks. You're out talking to the community and you're working with a population that we really don't get to see in the hospital, where it's acutely ill patients." The UD Partnership for Health Communities made the connection possible between the SON and DHSS. Rita Landgraf, director of the Partnership for Health Communities, said she hopes the success of the students will spur more UD health-related engagement in Delaware's communities. During

Urgent care is dead. Long live urgent care. - cleveland.com

Image
For anyone feeling ill on Christmas or while vacationing far from home, the nearest urgent care clinic may be the only option for avoiding an emergency room. Their competitive advantages, from a business standpoint, are many. Urgent care clinics are open seven days a week and often late into the evening. They take walk-ins or same-day appointments, don't require a referral and charge much less than an ER. But they weren't as common 15 years ago, when Zoom+Care Management Inc. opened its first outlet at an outdoor shopping mall in a suburb of Portland, Oregon. Zoom+ has grown to 60 clinics, mostly in the Pacific Northwest, including roughly two dozen in just the past two years. That growth trajectory has gained more, well, urgency amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Read the full story on cleveland.com's sister site, Cleveland Business Journal. Dear Doctor: Do I really have gout? Really? - OregonLive

Image
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 76-year-old female in reasonably good health. Around Thanksgiving last year, my left ankle was swollen, red and very painful. I thought it was tendonitis, so I stopped going for my half-hour walks in the morning. Around Christmas, my doctor ran a blood test that showed my uric acid was high. He said I had gout and prescribed Indocin and colchicine. I stopped taking it after a week because of bad side effects -- vomiting and dizziness. I took Advil when the pain was really bad, and I drank a lot of water and avoided trigger foods. My swelling has gone down, but the pain still comes in bursts. I have a lot of pain after sitting for a while, and when get up, I limp. Must I live with this pain, or is there medication that will get rid of the gout? I am concerned that I will not be able to walk. -- J.D.S. ANSWER: Although you might have gout, by themselves an elevated uric acid level and an affected joint do not make the diagnosis for certain. The diagno

Surprising Cost For Covid-19 Vaccine Administration - Forbes

On Valentine's Day, I was fortunate to get my first Covid-19 vaccine shot – Pfizer, of course. I was vaccinated at the Floyd Little Fieldhouse in New Haven which was set up by Yale New Haven Health. It was an excellent experience. The staff and volunteers were polite, helpful and well organized. The entire process took less than 30 minutes and that included the obligatory 15 minute wait after the vaccination to be sure that there were no immediate adverse effects. When I went back 3 weeks later, the process was just as efficient. Given a capacity of 1,400 people a day, Yale New Haven Health did a terrific job pulling this off. (Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images) Getty Images These vaccines are free to all patients, thanks to funding by the U.S. government which negotiated contracts with the Covid-19 vaccine makers that will supply enough vaccines to cover our entire population. Of course, these contracts came at a cost to the government, from $39 for Pfizer's two dose r

Providence is refurbishing old REI space in Anchorage's Spenard neighborhood to open primary and urgent care clinic - Anchorage Daily News

Image
Providence Alaska plans to open a clinic with primary care services early next year in the empty space that once housed REI in Anchorage's Spenard neighborhood, officials with the health care provider said. Following a $7.1 million remodel, the facility will also offer urgent care and other services, they said. It will employ more than 45 people, and is set to open in January. "By expanding primary care in particular we can give patients access to a continuity of care that helps them avoid episodic visits" to emergency rooms, said Tamara Brown, chief executive for Providence Medical Group Alaska, on Friday. The former REI space in the Northern Lights Center has sat partially empty since the national outdoor gear retailer left its longtime home there two years ago, relocating to the Midtown Mall, said Bob Doehl, the municipality's director of development services. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore occupies some of the old REI space, Doehl said.
