Free flu immunizations available in San Antonio - mySA

As this year’s flu season ramps up, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is offering free immunizations to the public while supplies last.

Vaccines will be available at Metro Health’s two immunization clinics on a first-come, first-served basis.

Walk-in patients are accepted at the East Side clinic at 210 N. Mel Waiters Way, which is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

The Frank Garrett Center, 1226 N.W. 18th Street, is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, by appointment only. Appointments can be made by calling (210) 207-8894.

The flu season can extend from October until May, with the most cases generally appearing between December and February. Health officials recommend immunization against the flu for everyone over the age of six months, including pregnant women.

The vaccine protects against certain strains of the flu. If a person contracts the illness, the vaccination could lessen the severity of symptoms. The 2017-18 flu season was particularly severe, killing an estimated 80,000 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
