If you've spotted the bright blue-and-white Bon Secours Care-A-Van out in the community, you've seen just one example of the Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation's support for the Bon Secours' mission. Staffed with physicians, nurses, social workers and interpreters, the free mobile health clinic operates five days a week and has served uninsured people in Richmond for 30 years. The Care-A-Van provides care for more than 13,500 patient visits every year.

Elevating investment in the community

The Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation is the public charity for Bon Secours Richmond, explained Ann Carpin, the foundation's president. Virginia's only faith-based health system, Bon Secours has seven hospitals in the Richmond area.

"As a nonprofit, the health system funnels all proceeds back into its vision for the community, including a broad spectrum of programs and initiatives. These programs focus on promoting the physical, mental and social well-being of people in the communities served by our hospitals, particularly those who are poor, dying or underserved," Carpin said. "The foundation's role is to raise funds to elevate the impact of the health system's investments in the community."

For instance, the Care-A-Van operations are fully funded by the health system, according to Carpin, but the foundation raised the funds to replace an aging van. "The foundation also raised $2 million to build out the Bon Secours Center for Healthy Living in the Manchester neighborhood, our very first fixed-site medical home that serves as an extension of the mobile Care-A-Van," Carpin said. The Center for Healthy Living serves uninsured patients who would otherwise not be able to receive care.

Serving vulnerable populations

Donors to the foundation support far-reaching and diverse programs that serve people in need regardless of their ability to pay, Carpin said. For example, Noah's Children provides palliative and hospice care for children with life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses and their families at no cost. "For more than 25 years, Noah's Children has cared for the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of families of ill children," Carpin said.

The need for nurses

Scholarships for nursing students are another way the foundation supports the health system's mission to provide for the community. "Without the foundation scholarships, these students may not have been able to complete their education," Carpin said. "Our donors are helping to build the next generation of nurses."

Caring for patients' families

When a loved one is in the hospital, it can be a very stressful time for families. Bon Secours operates the Evelyn D. Reinhart Guest House, which provides a home away from home where family members can stay, be close to the patient and visit regularly. "The foundation provides the support so that no one is ever turned away from staying at the guest house due to inability to pay," Carpin said.

Donations make these programs possible

"As a faith-based, not-for-profit health care ministry, Bon Secours is committed to removing barriers to health care access and quality and to impacting the broad social drivers of health, particularly for the uninsured or marginalized," said Becky Clay Christensen, executive director of community health for Bon Secours Richmond.

"Donor support helps bridge gaps in access to health care and address inequalities in social determinants of health. Together, we can make a positive impact that extends far beyond individual lives and transforms our communities for the better," Christensen said.

Nestled in the heart of the Midwest, Nebraska Cancer Specialists (NCS) shines as a beacon of hope and a commitment to making a meaningful impact in the lives of cancer patients and their families. Supporting the mind, body and spirit, the organization demonstrates the importance of community in the journey toward healing.

The power of personalized care

At Nebraska Cancer Specialists, it is the belief that each patient is unique and their treatment should be, too. The providers, care teams and support staff at NCS work diligently to create individualized treatment plans. This personalized care helps to create a sense of community for patients and tends to enhance their quality of life.

Emotional support and well-being

A cancer diagnosis can seem isolating and intimidating to many patients. At NCS, the compassionate staff recognizes the importance of mental well-being in the healing process. To address this, NCS offers a range of emotional support services including counseling, support groups and peer mentoring programs. These resources provide patients and their families with a safe space to share their experiences, fears and hopes, fostering a sense of community and solidarity.

Family and caregiver support

Cancer affects not only the patient but also their loved ones. Recognizing this, NCS extends their support services to families and caregivers, offering counseling, peer mentorship, caregiver support groups, and education and resources tailored to their needs. They are committed to building lasting relationships built on trust and strengthening them by creating strong support networks among patients, families and caregivers.

Making strides in cancer research

NCS is at the forefront of cancer research, and the leading research program aims to pioneer new treatments and therapies with the potential to revolutionize cancer care. Their commitment to research ensures that patients right here in the Midwest have access to the latest advancements in cancer care.

By involving the community in these efforts, NCS fosters a sense of shared purpose and hope, demonstrating that together, people can make significant strides in cancer research. Not only does their commitment to innovation improve outcomes for current patients, but it also paves the way for future breakthroughs that will benefit generations to come.

A sense of community

The importance of community in cancer care cannot be overstated. It is through the collective efforts of dedicated medical oncology care teams, supportive families and an engaged community that NCS can provide the comprehensive care that cancer patients deserve. Together, NCS can make a difference in the lives of those facing cancer, offering not just treatment, but hope, strength and a sense of belonging.

Community involvement and support

One of the best parts about the culture at NCS is their deep-rooted connection to the community. They support and encourage collaboration with local businesses, volunteers and organizations to provide resources and assistance for patients and their families. One of the primary ways in which they give back is through the NCS Hope Foundation.

Founded in 2018, NCS Hope Foundation supports cancer patients and their families through financial assistance, free health screenings, health and wellness classes, and a holiday giving drive. This past year, NCS Hope Foundation granted assistance to 496 patients and families from hospitals, clinics and practices across the state of Nebraska.
